Procedural generation is the method Starbound uses to generate, or assemble, content algorithmically rather than manually. Several game features rely on this method, especially Planets and what they contain. Planets and their conditions are generated on-the-fly during gameplay. Conditions assigned can include its Difficulty, Biome, Weather, and Gravity. Each planet inhabits procedurally designed Monsters for the player to encounter on their journey of exploration; their appearance and abilities, and their movement type are assigned accordingly. Planets may also include randomly generated Structures such as Dungeons or civilizations occupied by NPC's of a specific race to suit the planets specific Biome.

Objects

Objects found on Planets are randomly generated into the terrain and consist of a variety of placeables. Chests and other Containers can be found throughout a Planet and contain random items and weapons.
