Biome Image Layout

I'm down for the titles of biomes not being on the image!

The screenshots would probably look better if we cropped them to be pixel perfect, instead of using lanczos or bilinear scaling. That's my only issue with them. The ones I took are cropped to maintain 2x scaling, but any screenshot used could be made to be 2x or 1x scaling to preserve the features!

Examples of scaling where it preserves the pixel art's detail I feel like cropping it while at 2x scale looks better, because the other seems kinda difficult to make out.

We kinda trampled on each other's toes there, sorry!

What bothered me most about the old images is that they made all the biomes look so similar and indistinct when this is very much not the case! I want to emphasise the key details of the biome and the awesome background parallax as much as realistically possible, without forcing everyone to view giant screenshots as thumbnails, which is why I went for this.

The screenshots were all gathered around the vicinity of [17784,64853]. The moon I used - because it's absolutely perfect for the biome thumb - is Syrma Strand IIa.

Biome associations: Planet/Sub-Biome Spreadsheet

I want to point out either an error or a confusion in this spreadsheet. Take a look at Desert for example. Desert is only a Tier 2 planet and yet it can have a Tier 3 biome as it's sub-biome. Does this mean that a Desert Planet will never have a Savannah subbiome unless it orbits a Temperate Star? If so, where is defined?

Blackwood (talk) 00:28, 27 August 2016 (EDT)

This is a break from the existing tradition so I'm going to explain my reasoning here.

It looks like in the current 1.0 planetgen code, every planet-defining biome is able to trigger the spawning of its associated secondary biome, allowing for really weird stuff like Springs to show up on Volcanic worlds because Volcanic worlds will sometimes generate Gardens (aka Lush worlds).

In other words, Volcanic --allows--> Garden --allows--> Spring.

That being the case, I refer to the biomes in play on a planet like this:

  • Dominant - the "supermajor"; the one that shows up on the nav console, the one that sets the background parallax, the one that authorises the spawning of any additional major biomes
  • Major - any biome that can define a whole planet but not the master biome on this particular world
  • Minor - a biome dependent on, and overwriting, a parent major biome

Other possibilities biome, sub-biome, mini-biome? I've also seen primary biome, secondary biome, mini biome on the forums/reddit. Blackwood (talk) 13:11, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

Page Layout

This is more for the pages this page links to, e.g., Garden, Desert, Ocean, et cetera. The current layout sometimes uses {{FoundInList}}. However, should that be used for biomes, surface mini-biomes, and underground mini-biomes? Aren't such objects actually attached to the dungeons and microdungeons (which can include changes to just terrain + a chest)?

On the other hand a person seeking to find a particular object would like to know which world to search to have the best odds of finding them and most microdungeons are tied to specific biome. Thought? Blackwood (talk) 13:15, 16 August 2016 (EDT)

Cave Name

Since the official names all have caves in them then should it say caves instead of removing it despite being organized under a cave section? Blackwood (talk) 15:46, 25 August 2016 (EDT)

My argument here is simple - it looked really stupid until I changed it. Also, referring to them as Underground Caves distinguishes them from surface Biomes as they seem to have little, if any, connection. Velotican (talk) 20:48, 25 August 2016 (BST)

Official Biome names

Here's the list of 'official' names for each biomes direct from Chucklefish. Note, some of these aren't referenced by these names anywhere in game - but these are the names that have been confirmed they'll be using for any publications or marketing materials.
