A sapling. From simple roots a tree will grow.

Saplings drop from cut down Trees. Players can place them on dirt to regrow trees, if enough space is around and above the placed sapling.

Sapling icons in player inventory shows the traits of the tree it will grow. The left is bark type and color, while the right is leaf type and color.

Saplings, unlike other crops, do not need tilled or watered soil to grow. Once placed, saplings have two main growth stages, each range from 2.5 to 3 minutes. Therefore, the tree will fully grow in 5 to 6 minutes.

As a sapling grows, its dome cracks more and more. Enough room must be above the sapling to fully grow in height or the sapling will reset to its base size. The sapling will keep trying to grow until either it is successful or you remove it - the sapling may then infinitely cycle between its base state and growth states, trying to make a full tree even though there is not enough space for the tree to grow.

IF THE TREE HAS NOT FULLY SPROUTED WITHIN 10 MINUTES, IT WILL NEVER DO SO. Leaving and returning to the grow location is sometimes needed to update the tree (observed when planting and standing near sapling for 15 minutes with no change, but immediate change upon leaving and back).
