Edit summary/reason (summary) | Added Link to Images of ornate maze, as this page lacks images to mentioned structures. I do not know how to embed images as I am new, so I provided an imgur link instead. I might add images for the other maze variants if I get around to it. |

Underground Maze is a set of four disabled dungeons found in the Starbound assets, known as mazeornate, mazeplant, mazestone, and mazetech. All four are very similar in appearance, modulo construction materials. Not much is known about the intent of these dungeons, as they are clearly incomplete.
Each of the dungeons generates a series of random corridors, ultimately leading to a large chamber containing a hugebiped monster, an unimplemented type of monster, presumably some type of mini-boss. Beyond this chamber is a room containing a Shield Generator, so presumably the dungeon would have been shielded prior to destroying the mini-boss, despite the fact that the dungeon's metadata files do not enable shielding. Beyond the shield room is a room containing a Weapon Chest, presumably the player's reward for completing the dungeon.
Each underground maze dungeon begins with an "entry" dungeon part that contains a playerstart object, a special type of object that is only used in instance-world dungeons, into which the player is beamed, not in planetary dungeons that spawn randomly on planets. From this, one can speculate that players were intended to find some type of underground door that would cause them to be beamed into these dungeons, similar to Challenge Doors.
The dungeons are implemented using the Tiled dungeon editor, indicating that they were a relatively recent addition to the Starbound assets. It is unknown whether this is a concept that Chucklefish have abandoned, or whether they intend to finish these mazes in a future release. |
