There have been a number of Official Contests that have been run on the Starbound website and forums.

Monster Monster (3/5/12 - 3/19/12)

This contest tasked the community to design a monster for Starbound. The winner was selected by the developers and announced on the website on March 23, 2012, the prize was inclusion in the game. Three runners up were also selected and their entries are included in the game as well.

Create-A-Hat tasked the community with designing hats for Starbound characters, the top 10 hats were added to the game as vanity items.
