Hokucide is a Tier 4 unique broadsword. The blade resembles a crashing wave. Completing the side quest The Final Acquisition guarantees this weapon.

Its description is "Accidentally formed from a sword at the bottom of the ocean during a particle accelerator explosion."

The primary attack is the standard Broadsword combo with a base DPS of 27.5.

The secondary attack, Great Wave, has an energy cost of 100 according to the game assets. However, this energy cost is not actually used in practice, making this one of the few alt abilities without an energy cost.

When Great Wave is activated, the player draws their sword up and back, then quickly slashes down toward the ground, creating a water shockwave which deals no damage but has a knockback power of 40 (very strong knockback) and travels over 12 tiles of distance. The move can only be used once every 2 seconds, and the shockwave only travels along solid blocks, not along platforms.

When upgraded at a Weapon Upgrade Anvil to tier 6, the Hokucide's broadsword combo DPS increases to 38.5, and the Hokucide's appearance changes to the one shown below.

Apart from the addition of a gold star to the name, no other changes occur as a result of the upgrade.

Strategy

  • Due to the complex, time-consuming and out-of-the-way nature of the quest to obtain it, the Hokucide can be easy to miss. By the time the average player obtains the Hokucide, they may already have higher tier weapons at that point. However, like many non-tier 6 Unique Weapons, it can be upgraded to tier 6 at a Weapon Upgrade Anvil, making it quite powerful, although slightly less stronger than the empowered Protector's Broadsword.
  • The Hokucide is a very effective backup weapon for characters specializing in staves, as the secondary ability causes extreme knockback, making it good for keeping enemies away to give yourself time to charge said staves (or wands).

Trivia

  • The weapon's name and secondary attack refer to the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai, whose most famous work is titled "The Great Wave off Kanagawa"
