Transform into a sphere that can climb walls! [F]

Spike Sphere is a Head Tech that allows the player to transform into a ball that can attach to surfaces. While activated, characters are shown as a red sphere with yellow lines, and will automatically stick to floors, walls and ceilings. It's unlocked using eight Tech Cards at a Tech Console or the Tech Lab of the Outpost.

Spike Sphere functions similarly to the Distortion Sphere, but cannot jump, and has a lower base speed of 10 (default run speed in humanoid form is 14) in exchange for its ability. Damage taken while stuck to a surface, such as from a spike or an enemy, will eject the player from the surface and prevent them from sticking to another surface for 0.2 seconds.

Warning: the Run Boost buff can interfere with the Spike Sphere's adhesiveness, depending on its magnitude. The 20% Run Boost from food such as Pineapple Pizza Slice or Augments like the Mobility Augment will sometimes interfere, detaching the sphere from corners and edges, but the 50% Run Boost from a Green Chemist crew member or a Green Stim Pack frequently interferes with surface adherence, making staying on walls while turning on corners and edges extremely difficult, so beware when turning around corners above high heights.

While in Spike Sphere form, the player only collides with platforms if they are not attached to terrain or a solid object; otherwise, platforms are ignored, allowing the player to travel down walls without having to worry about catching on platforms.

It can be used to access pathways that are too small for the player to walk inside. However, players in a Spike Sphere cannot jump, nor can they warp back to their ship, and will need to switch back to normal form in order to do so.

When this tech is equipped, press 'F' to toggle between sphere and normal form.

Transforming into the sphere consumes 50 energy. Players still receive full damage, thus you can be attacked easily whilst traveling. Holding 'F' will force the player out of sphere form even if in a space a player cannot usually fit.

Trivia

  • The sphere appears to be based on the signature 'Morph Ball' technology utilized in the Metroid franchise. The Spike Sphere's ability to stick to walls and ceilings additionally makes it similar to the Spider Ball upgrade in Metroid II: Return of Samus.
